Peugeot 408 VS Citroën C5X

Design: the same silhouette

Difficult to store Peugeot 408 in a box. It looks neither like a real sedan nor an SUV. Sort of “crossover” positioned between several car categories, it displays the habitability of a family SUV but retains a sportier silhouette. So who should you put it against? A real SUV? An authentic sedan? Within the Stellantis group in any case, you don’t have to look far to find another vehicle of similar proportions. The Citroen C5X is a little bigger than the Peugeot 408, with a length of 4.81 meters against “only” 4.69 meters for the latter. And its design gives pride of place to curves where the family of the lion brand prefers taut lines. But these two cars with a not trivial approach display more or less the same general silhouette. In any case, in terms of style, we gladly put a small part on the Peugeot for its design, which seems to us a little less divisive than that of the Citroën. But you know what they say about tastes and colors…

Advantage : Peugeot, thanks to a slightly more consensual design?

Interior presentation: the Citroën defends itself well

Inside, the Peugeot 408 sports a dashboard with a sporty design, taken from the Peugeot 308. Reminiscent of the Audi A3, this dashboard has a serious finish but is more conventional than that of the Audi A3. a 3008. For its part, the Citroën prefers classic furniture that is not at all devoid of charm. Not really highlighted by the photo below, it does not suffer from the comparison with that of the Peugeot and even obtains the preference of yours truly. Here again everything will depend on your sensitivities because in terms of perceived quality in any case, we are at about the same level in both cars. On the other hand, the Citroën may have a comfort advantage thanks to its famous “Advanced Comfort” seats.

Advantage : Citroën, even more comfortable?

Habitability & trunk: slight Citroën advantage

With its 11 centimeters longer in length, the Citroën C5X logically has a small advantage over the Peugeot in terms of volumes. But the two machines, based on a similar platform, remain quite close in detail. Whether in the C5X or the 408, rear passengers are pampered with royal legroom and generous headroom. The Citroën retains a slight advantage in the trunk with 545 liters of volume (or 485 liters for the plug-in hybrid version). But the Peugeot is very close with its 536 liters (or 475 liters in plug-in hybrid).

Range of engines: an interesting point for the Citroën

The Peugeot 408 and the Citroën C5X use the same mechanical technology. The two cars thus offer a small petrol block of 130 horsepower at the entry level and a plug-in hybrid of 225 horsepower at the top of the range. The mid-range, however, allows them to be distinguished: while the 408 offers a 180 horsepower version of the same plug-in hybrid powertrain, the C5X prefers the option of a 180 horsepower 100% thermal petrol unit. In the absence of diesel, this last option seems to us the most relevant for large rollers. This is why the C5X leaves in our opinion with an advantage at this level.

Technology: More comfort at Citroën?

Again, we end up with two models sharing exactly the same technology. The 408 and the C5X use the latest evolution of the digital interface common to Peugeot, Citroën and DS. The equipment does not suffer from any shortcomings with the usual adaptive cruise control, lane keeping system (among other driving aids), head-up display or wireless connectivity. But while the 408 is content with passive shock absorbers, that of the Citroën C5X offers a variable system adjustable in three positions. What offer better comfort? During our first test in any case, the station wagon of the chevron brand was imperial on this point.

Advantage : Citroën thanks to adjustable damping?

The winner: Citroën C5X?

Bigger, just as well equipped and potentially more comfortable, the Citroën C5X does not suffer at all from the comparison with the Peugeot 408 when you look at what these two cars have on paper. Especially since they are negotiated at almost the same price: we do not yet know the prices of the other versions of the range, but the 408 First Edition costs €50,600 with its 225 plug-in hybrid horsepower. In its high-end finish, the C5X with the same mechanics is trading at €50,550. Peugeot does offer a discount of €49,850 to take advantage of the €1,000 bonus reserved for plug-in hybrids, but it is undoubtedly possible to obtain the same kind of gesture for the Citroën. It remains to be seen whether the 408 is more interesting to drive than the C5X and above all, how the customers react to the style of these two models. We will be driving the 408 in a few days.
