Hyundai Ioniq 6: on board the large electric sedan

After the Ioniq 5, an electric car with the look of a large cubic compact, Hyundai is unveiling the second model in its electric range. First encounter with the streamlined Ioniq 6 sedan.

Two years after the concept Prophecy, presented in March 2020, Hyundai unveils the definitive version of its low profile sedan, the Ioniq 6. And as expected, it is very close. By revealing their new baby to us, the designers of the Ioniq 6 affirm that the development was rapid: 37 months only between the first drawings and the final version before our eyes.

XXL sedan

The design is totally different from the Ioniq 5looking like a big VW Golf 1, the models being seen as pieces of a chess game. Each vehicle has its use, its role and its audience. The Ioniq 6 is not really made to be a family car according to the manufacturer, but rather as a large statutory sedan, also serving as an office as needed. For example, a laptop can be placed on the wide, flat and fixed center console.

Long from 4.86 m including 2.95 m wheelbase, for 1.88 m wide and only 1.50 m high, the Ioniq 6 is very streamlined. This offers it great efficiency, thanks to a Cx of 0.21. Like the Ioniq 5, it can have optional camera mirrors. It draws its inspiration from aeronautics and the very aerodynamic Streamliner trains. The latter also inspired cars of the 1930s and 1940s such as the Saab 92 (1947) or the Phantom Corsair (1938). The Ioniq 6 receives twelve metallic, pearl or matte body colors, some of which have been created using pigmented paint made from recycled bamboo charcoal.

Outside, the large sedan receives the new “flat design” logo, still H-shaped, and 18 or 20-inch rims. The front overhang is very short, almost non-existent, while the rear overhang is a little longer. It in turn declines the pixel theme, already seen on the Ioniq 5, with 726 pixels on the entire body. Some serve as lighting, while others are embossed on the bodywork, such as on the load hatch. Active aero flaps are placed at the bottom of the front fascia.

A thin black bar across the width of the bumper encloses parking sensors. On each side, air intakes slightly offset towards the interior make the most of aerodynamics. On the trunk, there is a double fin: a large fixed element painted black incorporates the brake light, and a smaller one, in body color, is placed above the lights and the Ioniq 6 logo. At the bottom of the rear bumper, a large dark gray and black diffuser incorporates the license plate and pixel lights for the fog lights and reversing lights.

Habitacle zen

On board, the cabin is very refined. There are dominant shades of white, beige and gray, and lots of recycled materials. There are no buttons on the door trims, the window controls being placed in the center of the center console. This one is floating, with storage space for a purse at the bottom. The door bins or the bottom of the center console are transparent, reflecting the ambient light combining blue and purple-pink.

Two 12-inch screens are placed on the dashboard, like the Ioniq 5, for the counters and the multimedia system. At the end of the dashboard, two other U-shaped integrated screens display the camera mirrors. The left side is very close to the steering wheel. We will have to see if this does not interfere with driving. Finally, the four small dots on the steering wheel in place of the logo are interactive: they display the battery status or the activation of voice recognition.

Thanks to its modular E-GMP platform and its XXL wheelbase, the Ioniq 6 offers plenty of space on board. Rear passengers have plenty of legroom thanks to the flat floor. The rear trunk, the value of which is unknown, is deep since Hyundai announces that it can fit 2 golf bags in it. A small additional box (“frunk”) at the front is used to store the charging cables.

Prices and marketing

For the moment, the manufacturer does not give information on the mechanical part or the autonomy. The technical sheet should be close to that of the Ioniq 5, which shares the same platform. As a reminder, the SUV offers two battery capacities, 57 and 73 kWh (soon to be increased to 77 kWh), and three engines: 170 hp for the small battery, 218 hp for the large battery and 306 hp for the 4×4 HTRAC variant (with large battery).

The marketing of this Ioniq 6 sedan is scheduled for the end of 2022. The presentation of prices should take place when the first reservations open, scheduled for next September.
