Electric cars – Top 20 sales in August 2022, the Peugeot e-208 ahead of the Fiat 500

It’s time to take stock of sales of electric cars in France in August 2022. At the top of the podium, we are witnessing a Franco-Italian match between the Peugeot e-208, number one, and its runner-up, the Fiat 500 In ambush, the Dacia-Renault duo with the Spring and the Zoe.

The hemorrhage that has affected the French automobile market for 14 consecutive months marks a pause. Although considered the smallest month of the year, August saw new car registrations increase by 3.79% compared to August 2021 (88,065 copies), whose number of working days (22) was identical. Admittedly, we are still far from the 129,257 registrations of August 2019.

Thus, since the start of 2022, 971,033 new vehicles have been registered, a decrease of 13.8% compared to 2021. The finding is worse if we compare with 2019, the reference year. before the Covid crisis during which 1,467,191 new cars had been registered over the same period. In this case, the drop reaches 29.3%.

Of course, the causes of this gloom put forward over the past 15 months are more or less the same. In addition to the Covid crisis, according to NGC-Data, the “rise in raw materials and energy prices, difficulties in the production and supply of semi-conductors, economic uncertainty of all kinds (war in Ukraine) and inflation of “only” +5.8% ( INSEE) in August“.

Another factor, part of the French population “also waits, before choosing your next vehicle, to find out what its room for maneuver will be with regard to traffic restrictions in metropolitan areas and with regard to the evolution of fuels (prices and taxes)“.

Finally, the historic manufacturers now prefer to favor a policy of moving upmarket to preserve their margins (electric motorization, availability of high finishes, lower discounts) to the detriment of registration volumes at all costs.

Electric, more electric

Those who predicted a domination of electric over diesel and gasoline from this summer will be at their expense. If the share of diesel has weakened by 11%, fuel nevertheless retains a market share of 16.7%, just under 4 points above electric (12.1%). The electric, precisely, increased by 24% in August. Ditto for gasoline, whose market share is 38%.

In August 2022, 118,375 new electric cars were sold, an increase of 32% compared to the same month in 2021.

Franco-Italian match between the Peugeot e-208 and the Fiat 500

We are always very fond, especially in sport, of confrontation between France and Italy. We have to believe that the automobile is not to be outdone, especially in the electric segment, where the Peugeot e-208 (11,982 VP) takes the crown of number one ahead of the Fiat 500 (11,185 VP). Note that the two manufacturers have the same parent company, namely Stellantis.

In 3rd place, another serious challenger with the Dacia Spring (10,852 VP), pack leader of the Dacia-Renault duo, since in 4th and 5th places, we find the Renault Zoe (9,516 VP) and Twingo ( 9315 VP). On the top 10, Renault and Dacia place four cars against three for Stellantis.

The good surprise comes from Tesla, whose Model 3 (8063 VP) and Y (4713) respectively occupy the 6th and 8th places. We bet that the American manufacturer, whose registrations (12,777 PV) are down 19.2% since the start of the year, will recover.

Finally, this top 10 would not be complete without the 10th place of the Hyundai Kona (4232 VP).
