The Wey YuanMeng is the latest hybrid car from the Great Wall Motor group, and the least we can say is that its design leaves no one indifferent!
Foreshadowed by the eponymous concept car unveiled last year at the Canton Motor Show, the production version of the Wey YuanMeng was unveiled at the Chengdu Motor Show last week: this new Chinese plug-in hybrid car from the groupe Great Wall Motor (GWM) is surely the most unusual model of the year, with its style that seems straight out of the 1950s, halfway between a Volkswagen Beetle and a Chrysler PT Cruiser…
YuanMeng means “a dream come true” in Chinese. Technically, the model is derived from the Ora Punk Cat, another model betting on the neo-retro card: Ora, one of the other brands of the Great Wall Motor group, is in fact a specialist in this exercise, while Wey had instead focused on more conventional SUVs.
Wey YuanMeng: a neo-retro style
Aesthetically, the Wey YuanMeng sports a design that is reminiscent of certain productions from the 1950s, such as the Peugeot 203, with a good dose of bling-bling. There is an imposing grille with thick chrome stripsprominent wings, chrome bumpers, or full chrome rims, not to mention a curved rear trunk.
4.83 meters long, with a wheelbase of 2.92 meters, the model features a few modern touches such as a glass sunroof, or even LED opticswhich we find in its round headlights at the front and its taillights, without forgetting the two small lights that we find on the rear bumper.

Wey YuanMeng: a hybrid engine
Under the hood, we find a plug-in hybrid engine combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a 9-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Its combined power is 238 horsepower for 520 Nm of torque, while the 100% electric autonomy is announced at 195 km.
The petrol and electric charging flaps are integrated into the rear fenders, on both sides of the vehicle. Later, Wey will also launch a 100% electric motorization on the YuanMeng, as well as a four-wheel drive version.

Wey YuanMeng: a high-end interior
Inside, there is a cabin that is reminiscent of the latest Mercedes productions, with its turbine-shaped air vents, as well as its dashboard that embeds a vast black slabintegrating three large screens : one for the instrument cluster, one for the infotainment system, and a final one to entertain the front passenger. The central console is imposing and houses a large storage space accessible via the armrest, which opens in two parts.
For the moment, the Wey YuanMeng should only be marketed in China, but an arrival in Europe cannot be ruled out. Indeed, Great Wall Motor is setting out to conquer the Old Continent with its two brands Wey and Ora, and we should soon see a more complete range arrive in our region.
