Chez Audi, electrified models carry the e-Tron designation. This concerns both plug-in hybrid vehicles and 100% electric ones. The brand with the rings began its offensive in 2018 with its e-Trona large SUV of almost 5 meters, then declined in a coupe version then appeared thee-Tron GTa premium sedan designed on the same platform as the Porsche Taycan. Technologically advanced vehicles, but very expensive due to their premium positioning. It took 2021 for Audi to begin its downgrade with products that are still electric, but less expensive like this Q4. Even if it is more accessible than its counterparts, the fact remains that its prices start from €50,000 and it is even necessary to count €68,300 for our test model. We have known better in terms of democratization.

As its name suggests, the Q4 is an SUV. Measuring 4.59 m long, this Q4 is positioned between the Q3 and the Q5. Like most of the brand’s other SUVs, this one is also available in a coupe version called Q4 Sportback.

The wide full grille and the very technological headlamps are the hallmarks of this Q4.

Today, we are testing the “classic” version on trial. It displays a traditional look, but it is however the front part which is the most original with a large full grille surrounded by Matrix LED headlamps which can be personalized. The rear is for its part traversed by a light strip which joins the two lights.

The dashboard is original and shows a good dose of modernity.

In the passenger compartment, we discover a very horizontal plank with 100% digital instrumentation and aerators that run over the entire width. The multimedia screen measures 11.6 inches and this Q4 benefits from a few specific features such as the double-flat steering wheel equipped with illuminated touch buttons when the ignition is on, but also the floating console which frees up plenty of storage space.

Rear roominess is generous and the floor is totally flat.

Because of its volume, the trunk can easily accommodate the luggage of a family.

Good point also for the practical aspects. Passengers will enjoy more than adequate legroom and headroom. The icing on the cake, the floor is flat which makes it easy to use the central rear seat. Same observation for the trunk with a capacity varying between 520 to 1,490 liters, an advantageous volume for the category.

The Q4 is marketed with three 100% electric engines. Their powers range from 204 hp for the 40 version to 299 hp for our test model, passing through 245 for the 45 version, reserved exclusively for professionals. The 50 is therefore the most powerful, but above all, it is the only one to offer all-wheel drive. This difference in power is accompanied by a much greater torque with a value of 460 Nm, enough to bring down the 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 s and to reach a maximum speed of 180 km/h. Numbers that allow you to travel in complete peace of mind. Whatever the road network you take, a certain tone will be there. Not enough to destabilize this Q4, which shows a beautiful homogeneity. The four-wheel drive reinforces it in this area and allows it to have more versatility, especially for those who would like to venture on slippery terrain such as in the mountains for example.

Passenger comfort is at a very good level with excellent filtration of rolling noise, but also of air, whatever the tire fitment, 21-inch wheels included, even if the 20-inch naturally offer a more conclusive result. Without being extremely dynamic due in particular to a direction, which lacks a little consistency, while remaining precise, the Q4 offers great stability with perfectly controlled body movements. Finally, note that for once on an electric model, the feeling of the brake pedal is quite natural, close to that of a thermal.

Behind the steering wheel are two paddles to customize energy recovery.

Compared to some of these rivals, however, the Q4 stands out for its rather comprehensive recovery system. It is thus equipped, like the other models of the Volkswagen group, with a “Brake” mode which increases regeneration under braking, but above all, it has paddles behind the steering wheel in order to choose the power of recovery in normal mode (D). Three levels are available to you. As a result, thanks to all this, we have recorded an interesting balance sheet for consumption. Thus, on our test, we noted an average of 18.8 kWh / 100 km, enough to guarantee a range of more than 400 km.

Since its launch, the charging power has progressed.
Since its launch, the charging power has progressed.

In terms of charging, the Q4 has inherited a recent development allowing it to receive charging powers of up to 135 kW in direct current. Charge time from 5 to 80% is reduced to 36 minutes. No change in AC with 11 kW at the maximum with a charging time of 7:30.
