In the race for the solar electric car, Lightyear is a pioneer. The young Dutch manufacturer unveils its first model, a sedan simply called Lightyear 0. The car took no less than six years to develop and is covered with five square meters of solar panels to improve the range provided by its power pack. batteries.

5.083 meters long, 1.972 meters wide and 1.445 meters high, the Lightyear 0 weighs 1,575 kilos. It sports a design that is both minimalist and aerodynamic, marked by a small plunging bonnet and a drop-shaped passenger compartment that gives the car a fastback silhouette. At the front, the headlights are divided into three parts, while a light strip takes up the entire width of the car at the rear. The 19-inch rims are solid to promote aerodynamics. Very low, the drag coefficient is set at 0.19.

Technically, this Lightyear 0 has a quadruple electric motor of around 172 horsepower (130 kW) for 1,720 Nm of torque. Each motor is associated with a wheel, which allows the car to benefit from all-wheel drive. However, not all the torque is used to achieve feats: the 0 to 100 km/h is done in 10 seconds according to Lightyear, and the maximum speed is set at 160 km/h.

Just under 700 kilometers of total range

On the underbody side, the Lightyear 0 is equipped with a 60 kWh battery. According to Lightyear, the range is set at 625 kilometers. It can be increased by 70 kilometers thanks to the energy recovered by the photovoltaic panels. On the highway at 110 km/h, the autonomy drops to 650 kilometers without solar assistance. Average consumption is estimated at 10.5 kWh/100 km according to the WLTP certification cycle.

According to the statements of the manufacturer, during the summer, the Lightyear 0 can be used daily for 35 kilometers without being recharged thanks to a “solar yield of 11,000 kilometers per year”. “In Spain or Portugal, this period without recharging can be up to seven months”, promises Lightyear.

A durable and minimalist interior

The atmosphere is also minimalist inside this Lightyear 0. The cabin is entirely made with vegan or natural materials. The seats in particular are made of eco-responsible microfiber. The dashboard hosts a 10.1-inch touch screen. A few buttons on the center console control the automatic gearbox. A digital instrument cluster is present behind the steering wheel. At the rear, three real seats are available, and the trunk has 640 liters of cargo volume.

The Lightyear 0 is scheduled to go into production in the fall of 2022. The first deliveries to customers are scheduled for November 2022. Only 946 units will be produced. Their price? €250,000, all the same.

In short

The young Dutch manufacturer Lightyear presents the Lightyear 0. This first model is a long aerodynamic sedan, whose drag coefficient is set at only 0.19. Combined with a 60 kWh battery pack and five square meters of solar panels, this aerodynamics allows the car to enjoy a range of 695 kilometers. The advantage of solar energy is that this Lightyear 0 can be used daily without recharging when the weather is mild over long periods. The sedan also has a minimalist interior, featuring a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Marketed at the end of 2022, it is sold for €250,000.
