Human stupidity has no limit. The deliberate and gratuitous endangerment of which a young amateur cyclist was the victim on Tuesday, September 13, sadly illustrates the quote.
Ascent of the Col de Leschaux, 4:25 p.m. Mathis Decroux, 25, is doing his day’s session by bike. The amateur triathlete has just passed the sign indicating the summit at eight kilometers when he hears a car arriving behind him.
I felt hands on my shoulder, I couldn’t do anything
“I’m a dancer, I ride at about twenty kilometers per hour, it’s not a very steep section. Accustomed to being overtaken, the cyclist sees this time the car approaching him closely, very closely. “I said to myself another idiot who brushes, I could have put my hand on the bonnet. And then I felt hands on my shoulder. He pushed me, I was unbalanced, I couldn’t do anything, ”says Mathis who is sent into the background. The unthinkable has just happened.
“I tried to counterbalance myself on my bike but I couldn’t do anything. Mathis fell heavily onto the roadway and its gravel shoulder, scratching his left side deeply in several places. “When I got up, I hallucinated what had just happened to me. I could have had a hand go under the car. »
On the run, a small light gray car with a rounded shape
It all happened in a handful of seconds. Mathis didn’t have time to see the occupants, but he described a small light gray car with rounded bodywork. “I instinctively looked at my front wheel, trying to recover. After my fall, my first instinct was to try to see the license plate,” explains Mathis, who filed a complaint the next day with the Saint-Jorioz gendarmerie brigade. An investigation has been opened.
Shocked, the independent professional photographer shared his misadventure and his wounds (five days of ITT prescribed) with his 12,300 subscribers on Instagram. A beautiful sounding board to castigate the gesture of unconsciousness of which he was the target but not enough to raise awareness among cyclists.
“I am really pissed off by this kind of pitiful behavior. I was targeted in a situation where I found myself very vulnerable. The consequences could have been much heavier. Unconscious gesture, human stupidity or stupid bet, no reason is valid, it’s gratuitous violence, ”says Mathis who got back in the saddle the next day to overcome the trauma and climb the Col de Leschaux.
“Psychologically, I had to fight against a feeling of insecurity that I had never had, it was not easy. With each car that overtook me, I thought back to the fall, ready to hold the plate, ”confesses the one who overcame his injuries to take up a big challenge in his sights. “I was not going to reduce all the efforts of a big preparation to nothing, it would have been too much of a waste, all for puppets”, explains Mathis Decroux, finisher this Sunday, September 18 of Ventouxman in the Vaucluse. An L format triathlon, with 2 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling (2,400 meters D+) and 20 km of trail running (450 meters D+).
